THE DEAD LETTER !
They found the letter
in his hand
in his rumpled bed
just as he’d planned
and it destroyed his family…..
Each word brought
infinitesimal pain,
as each family member
wracked their brains
on why they didn’t see
His suicidal tendencies……
Till his letter shared his grief….
"Now I lay me down to sleep
As I feel narcotics slowly creep
Through my weary veins
There is no pain……. "
"Is this what Janis Joplin felt
When she loosed that rubber tube
Above that angry welt
From the needle’s mark
When it stole her dreams
And left us her remains…… "
"Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And as I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take….
Cause I can no longer take
My soul which chose to make
My life sheer misery."
Now he is on the other side
Between life and death
In that great divide
In that limbo where folks go
When they deny what
God has granted them,
In one sad act of dismantling
There’s a price their death bestows….
They’ll all have to watch
what they left behind
all the years they’ll miss
passing slowly by
cause they took their life
before their appointed times….
In a lesson tinged with sorrow
Where they’ll see that
their tomorrows
Held solutions they declined,
Days of joy beyond
the reasons they
chose to end their lives
endlessly replayed
with each soundtrack
wailing WHY?
There’s always tomorrow…
Don’t trade it for sorrow
Wait and see…let it be….
Only life holds the answers
to what you need.

Songwriter's Notes:
"Don’t be a John Belushi,
Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendrix
Sacrificing your tomorrows
On the alter of your present state,
Lest your soul be left to sit and stare
At all the promises your future held
Beyond your brief despair."
