Matt Doherty started his basketball career on Long Island as he was a standout in high school at Holy Trinity in Hicksville, New York. He was on the 1980 Holy Trinity team that won the Class A New York state high school boys basketball championship. He went on to play for legendary college coach Dean Smith, at UNC where he started alongside future National Basketball Association stars James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Kenny Smith, Brad Daugherty and Michael Jordan, He went on to have a successful career in coaching. First as an assistant coach at Davidson and then at Kansas. In 1999, he was named head coach at the University of Notre Dame in June 2000, he returned “home” as the head coach of the UNC Tar Heels.In 2001, UNC won the ACC Regular Season Championship and he was voted 2001 AP National Coach of the Year.
