"We are being asked to check out the barrenness, the deserted-ness in us, the place that is not bearing fruit — we call that sin," Father Perry tells us in his homily for Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent. "It's often a kind of ignorant place and just emptiness. The challenge of Lent is to look out, check out, find out, where we are barren — our sinfulness, our ignorance, out stubbornness, our refusal to grow and bear fruit."
