"I think this is a very difficult homily and set of readings to listen to for a lot of people in our church. There's a whole bunch of stuff out there, there's a whole bunch of relationships, and there's a whole bunch of turmoil over the question of divorce," Father Perry tells us for the 32nd episode of our Sunday Homilies podcast, and or celebration of the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time. "But interestingly, Jesus does something at the end of this reaction to them bout lifting up the question of marriage to an almost ideal point. It's almost ideal what Jesus is saying. Two become one. And I like without losing their individuality he still remains all of who he is; she still remains all of who she is - but they blend into this relationship, to this teamwork, to arrive at oneness even when there's differences of opinion. It's extraordinary. And I don't know that everybody can accomplish that, but that's what Jesus is calling us all to do. I believe that little children trust mommy and daddy with all their heart. And that's where their deepest safety is, with mommy and daddy. That's why divorce is so painful, when that gets torn apart."
