"I linked with Andre via the NY homie Skinny Friedman. I love rap music, but I sound like a nerd. So one of the reasons I love working with dope emcees is the ability to hone in on a concept together, but then they can actually execute it. That's what happened here. Andre sent me a song that included the Mase line, but it wasn't the focus of the track. We recalibrated and made it all about wanting to be like Mase. I mean, who didn't want to be like Mase chilling with Diddy in shiny suits, c'mon.
This song actually started on another beat, and I sat on it for a long time. I then had an aha moment revisiting the vocal, running it through heavy autotune, copying the resulting melody, and making a whole new song around it. The 2nd time around I think we really captured the nostalgia & ambition of the vocal a lot better." - Shiftee
