Description

In this episode, Professor Ben Saul provides an informed overview of the potential international crimes that have been perpetrated in Israel and Gaza over the last few weeks. He provides some context to the most recent escalation of violence, and discusses the challenges of navigating the misinformation and highly politicised discourse that can surround conflict in the region.

Professor Ben Saul is Challis Chair of International Law at the University of Sydney, an Associate Fellow of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in The Hague, and an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences. He is also the recently appointed in-coming UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. Ben has advised or consulted to the United Nations (including UNODC, UNESCO, UNHCR and OHCHR), the International Committee of the Red Cross, governments, regulators, judiciaries, and NGOs (including Amnesty International, Médecins Sans Frontières and the International Commission of Jurists), and delivered technical assistance in developing countries. He drafted the professional training curriculum on terrorism and international law for the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
