Description

The colonial legal system in Australia has played a significant role in crafting our understanding of race and shaping the lives of racialised communities in Australia and elsewhere. In this episode, LLB student Leah Liu talks to Dr Louise Boon-Kuo about her experiences working in the refugee law space, and how she strives to facilitate critical thinking and student initiative in learning through her elective unit 'Race and the Law'.

Louise Boon-Kuo researches in the areas of border control, criminalisation, race, and citizenship. She is particularly interested in the way in which laws construct and justify state responsibility for the violent impacts of border control. Louise is author of Policing Undocumented Migrants: Law, Violence and Responsibility (2018, Routledge). Louise is a member of the Sydney Asia Pacific Migration Centre, the Sydney Institute of Criminology and a member of the editorial board of Legalities (the journal of the Law and Society Association of Australia and New Zealand).

Prior to joining the University of Sydney Law School, Louise worked as a solicitor and coordinator in community legal centres specialising in refugee and criminal law, and has also been involved in numerous policy advocacy networks as well as community based projects.
