Kate Mooney believes wombats are the cleverest of all the marsupials. Kate was given her first orphaned wombat joey about 34 years ago. Since then, she has become a self-taught expert on their habits and characters, and has hand raised around 150 baby wombats at her farmhouse on Flinders Island.
The wombats Kate cares for are rescued either from the pouches of their dead mothers, who are killed on the island's roads, or found wandering nearby.
