Description

Historian Hugh Dickey presents fascinating new insights about the development of our towns and cities, including a focus on our "primate city" - Auckland.

One of the motivations behind this research was a determination that official statistics were not revealing a true picture of the actual population of New Zealand's towns and cities, but rather something of a “myth”.

Hugh looks at definitions used to determine how data was collected and defined to question the accuracy of long held claims attributed to it.

Early population statistics were taken by electoral district, a measure which didn’t necessarily correspond with towns as we know them or as they were. Hugh begins by examining Auckland’s reported 1867 population of 11,000.

Haramai tetahi ahua! Enjoy the journey!
