Description

One of the reasons a new library building was needed was a shortage of space. For some time this was also an issue in the new building as it was built in two stages meaning its full capacity wasn't available until the second stage was opened in 1982. In the meantime much of the library's collection was stored in its large basement facility.

Former manager Geoff Chamberlain worked in the old library just before the move to Lorne Street and remembers the process of moving the collection across the road, including the sometimes less than rigourous withdrawing process being employed by some staff members.

Mark also talks to Karel from the Central Library to find out exactly what is kept in the library's mysterious basement.

The two level facility which Karel describes as "magical" and "childlike" is indeed a realm rarely visited by anyone other than library staff, however listen carefully and you may just find a way to unlock the magic for yourself!

This podcast is part of a series looking at the inner-workings and history of the Auckland Central Library. Look out for more episodes soon!
