Description

If we say, form emerges out of movement, and that form is the outward envelope of the rhythmic pulse of change, then, what we give attention to is primarily not THINGS, but rather MOVEMENT.

Here, I talk about why I think in the world of nature, exponential expansion, or "the runaway," is the exception, and not the rule. I see it as a kind of transitional movement on the way to a new, higher order, state of balance.

This natural movement I contrast sharply with "the runaway" as it manifests in THOUGHT & CULTURE.

Here, we indeed see a pattern of movement which is both 'stuck in a rut' and thoroughly non-sustainable. This I call, using the famous Emerson aphorism, the "much will have more" of runaway patterns of movement. Because they emerge out of fragmentation, they can only be sustained by external inputs of energy. And because they are inherently deeply contradictory, the evidently always sooner or later self-destruct.

If any of this is true, which I think it is, it might be a good idea to become aware of these patterns of runaway in thought and culture in the same way a good naturalist is aware not just of 'invasive species' or 'weeds,' but also the deeper formative movements like disturbance, or grazing, or barbed-wire, or herbicide use, which, on the long term that are their cause.
