This is the fifth in a series of talks and demonstrations around a new technique central to my Music, Poetry & Dance performance project, THE CIRCLE IN THE SQUARE. It’s called, TALKING HANDS / TALKING FEET.
"If people..." is a little demo of how the technique of TALKING HANDS / TALKING FEET makes it possible to take a 37-step (syllable) aphorism, or sutra, of F.M. Alexander -- founder of the #ALEXANDERTechnique -- and actually "step it into sound and music." And, of course, to do the reverse, "step it back into speech."
"If people..." without talking about it shows how the movement, the meaning, the energy of the text in listening finds its what I call "qualitative ground." In both Space & Time. The idea is that the rhythms and harmonies and sounds are already there in relational resonance space. That is the number mentioned 1369 in the middle, a magical number when we begin to slow down enough to really listen, really explore it. We then step just a little bit of this relational resonance into Space and Time so we can hear it.
It's fun. But don't take my word for it. Try it as part of your AT & YOGA practice. It is important to free the eyes by not using any notation, or written text. So the first thing we do is to make a recording of the text and then learn the 37-step sutra poem aphorism by heart by ear, from the recording. Drumming. Tapping. Singing. Dancing.
It helps that the saying by F.M. ALEXANDER is a miniature masterpiece -- timeless and impersonal in its truth -- that speaks to the disharmony of the current cultural zeitgeist.
