The Benson Murder Case
By S.S. Van Dine
Narrated by Cathy Barratt
The Benson Murder Case, first published in 1926, is based on the actual murder of bridge-player and socialite, Joseph Elwell in 1920. To date the crime has remained unsolved.
This book is the first in a series featuring the flamboyant amateur detective, Philo Vance. Like most amateurs, Vance has a difficult relationship with the police, who are often forced to seek his help in solving crimes. In this case Vance identifies the murderer early in the piece but allows the police to go through the process of eliminating possible suspects until he is able to force a confession from the guilty party.
The author, Willard Huntington Wright, using the pen name S.S. Van Dine, published a further eleven Philo Vance novels between 1927 and 1939.
