Baba Tahir, also known as Uryan was one of the most eminent mystics of his era. He was one of the earliest of the Shaikhs, and lived under the Daylemite dynasty. He flourished about 1019 and died before 'Unsuri, Firdawsi, or any of their contemporaries became active. He was the author of many rubaiyat and and also treatises on various subjects. His work was the subject a number of a number of scholarly commentaries.
Edward Heron-Allen (1861 – 1943) was a polymath, among whose many interests were chiromancy, violin making and the study of Middle Eastern languages. As well as his translation of the rubai of Baba Tahir, he also produced a prose translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
This collection contains 62 rubai, 57 of which were rendered into verse by Elizabeth Curtis Brenton.
