Boule de Suif (dumpling) was originally published in a collection named “Dumpling and Other Stories of the War”, the background of which is the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 – 1871. Published in 1880 it is considered de Maupassant’s first literary masterpiece.
In this story a group of ten French travellers are detained at an inn by a Prussian officer. He is willing to let them proceed on their way – on condition that one of the passengers agrees to sleep with him.
