[BIRDFEED EXCLUSIVE] Katrin Mendelsohn is back on the Feed with “Looking At Me”!
-How long have you been creating music?
I’m still a bit of a baby bird when it comes to producing – I’ve been creating my own tracks for about a year and a half now. But music has been my kingdom for as long as I can remember. I spent over 12 years DJing events across Germany & Europe. Before that? Singing, dancing, and owning every stage I could find.
Then came the pandemic – and I thought, “Okay, how many ’80s, '90s, and '2000s hits can one DJ really play at weddings before losing their mind?”
I took a break – and then the bassline hit me. Electronic music grabbed me by the soul.
A few coachings & producing workshops later, some wild studio sessions, some chaos, a lot of heart – and boom: a producer queen was born. Love at first beat. No turning back now – only forward.
-What do you use to make your tracks?
I produce in Logic. I usually start with a bassline – the dirtier, the better. I love sounds with edge, grit, and character. But sometimes, ideas hit me at the weirdest times – in bed, walking through the city, or between two coffees. That’s when I pull out my phone and record a voice note before it escapes. Inspiration doesn’t clock in – Queen vibes show up when they please.
-How and when did you first discover Dirtybird?
When I produced my very first track, my coaches were like, “That’s such a Dirtybird vibe!” And I was like, “Dirty… what?”
I had no idea, but looked it up – and realized I already vibed with so many of the artists. So it clicked. Dirtybird and I – love at second sight. Now? Match made in bassline heaven.
-Which Dirtybird artist would you want to collaborate with the most?
VNSSA! The energy, the attitude, the sound – totally my vibe. I feel like we could create something seriously explosive together.
-If your entire life was a movie, what title would best describe you?
From Smalltown Girl and Dreams to Dream Life Overdrive
Because born in small town in Russia, then moved to Berlin, right now, I’m living my dream – with music, vision, heart, and a whole lot of bass.
-What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?
Still on my bucket list! I’ve been so caught up with gigs, DJing, kids, and life that the big concert experiences are still ahead of me. But hey – anticipation is its own kind of superpower, right?
-If you could time travel, where and when would you go?
I’d go back and catch some of the most iconic concerts in music history: Michael Jackson, Queen, early Britney… maybe even Woodstock. Just to feel that raw, live magic in real time. Goosebumps guaranteed.
-What species of bird best describes you and why?
Definitely the Grey Crowned Crane. Elegant, bold, proud – and wearing a crown, just like me. I think women in music (and in general) should show up, own their crown, and wear it loud. And if there’s a purple bird out there – I’ll claim it! Even if in nature it’s usually the males that show off… not in my queendom.
-What does Dirtybird mean to you?
To me, Dirtybird means: freedom. Creativity. Courage. Party. Family. A colorful flock of wild birds that live and breathe music – no boxes, just personality. I hope I’ll make it to the US soon and dance my heart out at one of those legendary Dirtybird parties – bringing a little European Queen vibe with me!
