KCSB’s Nkechi Ikem interviews Susan Faludi, the author of In the Darkroom. In the Darkroom explores and questions current understandings of identity through a story of her own
In 2004, Susan Faludi received an email from her father. Her father had received a gender reassignment operation in Thailand. This news comes as somewhat of a puzzling development. As a girl, Susan's father was traditionally masculine, elusive, and sometimes violent around her and her mother.
Susan travels to Hungary to live alongside Stephanie, her father's new name. Understanding Stephanie is learning experience. The book follows Susan has she learns about her Hungarian heritage, analyzes her own feminism, questions what identity is, and reckons with the image of her father now and how she used to remember him.
