Gelman, Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Author of the 2009 Annual Review of Psychology and the 2011 Annual Review of Anthropology, talks to Anna Rascouët-Paz about her articles Learning from Others: Children's Construction of Concepts, and Concepts and Folk Theories, which she co-wrote with Christine H. Legare. She explains that all of us are born with an essentialist bias, a useful tool for learning and categorizing concepts, but one we must avoid applying to social constructs, such as race and gender.
