Description

Today on Sojourner Truth, a wide ranging and in-depth conversation with Brazil-based Winnie Overbeek.

Overbeek is the coordinator of the World Rainforest Movement (WRM), a network supporting forest-dependent communities who are struggling to defend their territories in Latin America, Africa and Asia. We discuss the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil and its impact on Indigenous communities who live in the Amazon rainforest and other vulnerable populations. We also discuss the threat to the rainforest by fires and land grabs. Also, attacks on quilombolas, Afro-Brazilian land. The growing concern and resistance to multinational corporations establishing mega forest plantations, displacing villagers in Africa and Asia. Racism in Brazil, the Black Lives Matter movement there, and more.
