Today on Sojourner Truth:

Hurricane Dorian is now lashing South Carolina, where there is concern about storm surge and flooding. This, after leaving the Bahamas devastated. In particular, the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. The hurricane stayed over Grand Bahama for more than 41 hours, which is historic. It has caused massive devastation. According to the Bahamian government, at least 20 people thus far have been killed, but that number is expected to rise. Also, there is a list of over 550,000 people who are unaccounted for. We speak with Jeremy Collymore, the Special Advisor on Resilience Planning and Disaster Risk Management to the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies. He was the former Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). CDEMA is now mobilizing to respond to the crisis. We also speak with Dr. ChenziRa Davis Kahina, a Caribbean-based educator, cultural heritage artist and administrator, naturopathic therapist, ordained ministerial priestess, community developer and visionary.

Also, the UK is in turmoil as conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, backed by Donald Trump, faces defeat after defeat in Parliament as he tries to push forward on a no-deal Brexit. Our guest is Sam Weinstein, based in London, England. He is active with the Camden branch of Momentum, a regional grassroots network arising out of the movement following the Jeremy Corbyn for Labour Leader campaign. Weinstein was previously based in the United States, where he was an official with the Utility Workers Union of America.

Lastly, our weekly Earth Watch. Why is it that some environmentalists are against a move by the California Tropical Forest Standard? What's the problem? Our guest is Gary Hughes, who has worked for decades on forest, climate and energy issues, and is currently the California Policy Monitor with Biofuelwatch. Hughes will be in Santiago, Chile later this year for events surrounding the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
