The mass poor peoples assembly and teach-in was hosted on September 14, 2020, just weeks away from the upcoming November 2020 election. The first Poor Peoples Campaign was initially called by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It has now been revived by the Poor Peoples Campaign joint coordinators Bishop Dr. William J. Barber II and the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis.
The PPC fusion approach is centered around the themes of racism, poverty, the war economy, ecological devastation and the nations distorted moral narrative. Participants in this event, Voting is Power Unleashed, include the PPC Coordinating Committees (now in 43 states) and other civic, religious and social justice organizations. Also, cultural activist Jane Fonda, Mark Ruffalo, D.L. Hughley, Erika Alexander, and Charlemagne tha God. Presidential candidates from both major parties were invited. However, only Joe Biden responded, so he was the only one to address the agenda and priorities of poor and low-income people. The event also features Forward Justice, the NAACP legal defense fund, and is part of the M.O.R.E. Campaign, which stands for Mobilizing, Organizing, Registering and Educating people for a movement that votes.
