In 2012 the UN upgraded Palestine’s status to a “Non-Member Observer State” in what was seen as a rare victory for the increasingly marginalized nation. In his address President Abbas reminds the world of the challenges still faced by his people; the legacy of the 1948 Nakba, the plight of Palestinian refugees, and the aggressive expansion of Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip.
