Description

Join us on “Sojourner Truth” with host Margaret Prescod, as we begin a week of special broadcasts on Pacifica Radio’s KPFK, KPFA, WBAI and WPFW marking the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington as well as the 150th anniversary year of the Emancipation Proclamation.

On Monday, we get impressions from participants in the “Action to Realize the Dream” rally that brought more than 100,000 people to the nation’s capital this past Saturday.

Florida-based Zohara Simmons one of the women of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, discusses the movement that helped to make the 1963 March on Washington possible, and contrasts the 1963 event with this past Saturday’s rally.

Historians Dr. Gerald Horne and Professor Clarence Lusane join us to look at the period of emancipation and at the often overlooked post slavery period of Reconstruction. What was gained during that period and what was lost as the era of Jim Crow was ushered in. What did the movement at the time look like, what were its demands?
