It seems strange to say that someone who has been making sample based music for nearly two decades is "just hitting his stride", but that's the feeling with this first in a series of three singles from James Hayford on Filtered Deluxe Recordings.
In part one of the series, titled simply One - James brings together opposing musical forces with a confidence and playfulness that he has been honing for years, as heard through his edits as Shoes, mixtapes for Numero Group and his previous releases via Filtered Deluxe Recordings. One bridges the gap between downtempo/chill out, and uptempo dance music, with elements of breakbeats, latin, funk, and house music. A combination certain to please fans of throw back innovators like Fila Brazillia or DJ Food, as well as modern producers like Romare. This three part series also features the original art from musician and friend, Caural.
One kicks off the series with the track There Isn't Anyone, featuring soul drenched strings, dub effects and a funky beat and bassline. On the b-side, Can't Get Clean delivers a sleazy 70's vibe, with gauzy dreamlike vocals, and beats that build to a mid-tempo house chug.
