Haven’t I read this passage before? We seem to have a rerun of chapter 12 where Abraham pretends that Sarah, his wife, is his sister, and she is taken by another man, until God comes to the rescue. Abraham leaves his dwelling to sojourn in Gerar, a place he perceives to have ‘no fear of God’, has he learned nothing from Lot? However, he is mistaken, as Abimelech acts with integrity and heeds the voice of God; to return Sarah to her husband and to treat Abraham as a prophet of God. We see God’s continued mercy to Abraham and how he is honoured even when he doesn’t deserve it. God loves to give us second chances, even when we don’t deserve it. God intervenes to rescue Abraham, his chosen one, as he still does for us today. We look beyond to see Christ, the true prophet of God, who lives to intercede, who prays that we might live!
