This is Randi Hacker with another Postcard from Abroad from the Kansas African Studies Center.
With pulsing beats coming from their car stereo and fingers tapping the steering wheel, another happy customer leaves the parking lot of locally-owned Shosh Sounds Systems here in Nairobi. Not only does this happy customer drive away with a newly installed sound system but their system is also equipped with the most recent technological innovations. And who do they have to thank? Great-grandmother Cecilia Wangari. In her late 70s, Cecilia’s nimble fingers know their way around a car stereo, and being part of this family business for decades now, she also knows which product will best serve her customers’ needs. Whether it’s a subwoofer that provides the bass for those late night city drives or a smaller Pioneer stereo that reduces the monotony of urban commuting, Cecilia knows just what you need. Her judgement is sound.
