Description

In this episode we explore myth. Stories. And how the story we live in as a coach effects the lives of our players. We as coaches get the unique responsibility to stamp values onto our players souls. Are we stamping self serving crap? Or a legacy? Dr. Joseph Riggio challenges us in his unique way to be better, to admit our flaws, and lead.

Some gems from the interview:
Represent to your players the man I hope I can be for them rather than worry I am saying the right things all the time. You must love your players. There is a window here that is open to their future. It makes a difference in their life not just this game.

They get to deal with what just happened and how they choose to get back out on that field against the odds....because most of life I see lots of moments in life we are going against the odds. And how you choose to deal with what just happened, and how they chose to step out on to that field against the odds.

I see in lots of moments of life you are going against the odds. How you deal with the fact the odds are against you. Determines who you know yourself to be, win or lose. You can't always get what you want. But you can always determine how you play the game.

And if you can't find that answer for yourself as the coach. If cannot dig in deep enough for who you are, then you can't speak to those guys (the players) .

This is where many coaches fall on their face, as opposed to they should really fall on their sword. They refuse to be vulnerable at that point.

Im suffering with you. I make mistakes. I am not perfect. Because if I was perfect you would be a perfect team, because I would have coached you perfectly. And we would not be facing this situation. But between you and I. Here we are.

What are you doing other than coaching to be a better coach. What are you doing on who and how you are a better human being? So that tomorrow you are a little bit more than you were today?

Football is about the ultimate commitment to being part of something bigger than you are. .Executing that play as 11 guys all at once. That is remarkably unique. There is no other sport where that is as true as in football. You have to give yourself up to the team. That takes heart.

On leadership-What do I need to do so these guys on the field can be better today than they would be if I was not here. Thats leadership.

On team rules:they need to be held in a container that allows them to grow at the developmental rate that they are capable of growing that demands they have a set of rules placed around them until they no longer need these rules.

On everyones a winner.
