PShift today 26 july 2013(Fridays at Noon on 4ZZZ fm 102.1) - Refugees and imperialism - here is a short interview PShift had with KRudd this morning:
Short interview with K Rudd about refugees
Pshift: did the Australian government just grant a contract to Decmil to build a refugee centre on Manus island in PNG?
K Rudd: Yes. It was a $137 million contract for construction of a village on Manus Island, PNG for Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
PShift: Did you grant the contract on the eve of your announcement that no boat people would be granted asylum here in Australia?
K Rudd: Yes, we need to support our decisions with actions.
PShift: What is the most important moral issue of our times?
K Rudd: I still maintain that it is Climate Change but as I pointed out during the Howard era another great challenge of our age is asylum seekers.
PShift: Why do you say that?
K Rudd: Because of the biblical injunction to care for the stranger in our midst, that is clear.
PShift: Can you explain more fully?
K Rudd: Certainly. The parable of the Good Samaritan is but one of many which deal with the matter of how we should respond to a vulnerable stranger in our midst.
PShift: Can you be more specific?
K Rudd: That is why the Howard government's proposal to excise the Australian mainland from the entire Australian migration zone and to rely almost exclusively on the so-called Pacific solution should be the cause of great ethical concern to all the Christian churches.
PShift: Didn’t the Decmil share price shoot through the roof as soon as the announcement was made.
KRudd: I couldn’t possibly comment on market fluctuations.
PShift: I think we will have to leave it there.
