In 1967 the Queensland passed laws banning street marches to stop the Vietnam war protests. In 1977 it got worse, Bjelke-Petersen banned street marches to stop the anti-Uranium movement. There were 3,000 arrests, with 418 people arrested in one day on 22 Oct 1977. This was the biggest movement of mass civil disobedience in Australian History with the exception of the Aboriginal resistance. No political party was game to ban street marches again in the 40 years that followed. Until now ... with the Liberals in the Brisbane City Council and the Labor party in state parliament wanting to do just that.

Here is an interview with Michael Berkman over the government's attempt to turn back the clock in Queensland. This interview came after Liberal Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner tried to stop a peaceful march for democratic rights on 28 Aug 2019 organised by Jonno Sri, Counsellor for the Gabba ward.
