James 4:11-17
11 Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. 12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor? 13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. 17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

Discussion Questions
Tell about a time when you were forgotten or ignored that hurt you.
Do you see the future anxiously, helplessly, or pretentiously?
Pastor Katie said, “We do our best, but trust that God knows best.” What situation are you struggling to trust that God knows best, because things haven’t worked out as planned?
As you think through your day, what would it be like to live like someone who is fully loved and fully trusts Jesus in your schedule and responsibilities?

Congregational Prayer

O God here I am again, standing too tall,
seeing myself with greater admiration than I deserve.
It’s not because of your great love,
or the great work of your Son Jesus
that I am filled with pride today,
but rather because I have once again believed that my efforts,
my talents,
and my plans
are to credit for my success.

I have believed the same old tired temptations that still prove effective,
putting my faith more and more in myself,
assuming the best about me and the worst of others,
Until I crash again on the rocks of reality,
rediscovering my pride and limitations.

In those moments of failure, humiliation, or hypocrisy
I am reminded again that I am not in control,
I lack the ability to secure the future I want,
But you are in control, and you are always working,
even in the inconsistencies and disappointments of my life

So once again, I come to you,
admitting my limitations and embracing the unlimited love you offer me.

Keep me, Lord, on my knees,
so that I cannot look down on others,
or look ahead to the worries of tomorrow

Amen.
