Scripture Reading
James 5:1-6
1 Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. 2Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment. 4For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 5You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you.
Discussion Questions
1. Do you consider yourself rich?
2. Give an example of a time when you lost your comfort? Tell us about a season you might have struggled to believe that you are a Christain.
3. Of the three examples (Hoarding, Luxury, Injustice) James uses to describe materialism or the love of money which seems to be most common to you?
Congregational Prayer
God, there is little in this life,
that reveals the state of my heart more than money.
When I am anxious, I easily believe shiny things
will guarantee my satisfaction and security,
as if my soul could truly be satisfied outside of you.
Lord, you are not stingy.
You do not begrudge me for happiness.
You have created a world filled with small pleasures,
and created me with a great capacity to enjoy them.
Where my undoing as been my own doing,
buying things I do not need and cannot afford,
teach me the difference between enjoyment and indulgence.
Ease the ache within my soul, which convinces me that
something could ever satisfy my eternal longings.
Let me instead consume your pleasures,
without being consumed by them.
Spare me the heartbreak of trusting in trinkets that
cannot hold the weight of my greatest hopes,
or bear the burden of my greatest sorrows.
When I have more than enough,
teach me to live more generously towards those
whose needs are greater than my own.
God, day-to-day, and month-to-month,
You are teaching me how to trust you more.
Give me more contentment and confidence in your care.
Amen.
