Facing a potential state takeover, Jefferson County Public Schools is trying to address disparities between black and white students. The district recently passed a racial equity plan that addresses issues such as the achievement gap, discipline rates and the lower rates of some students of color in talented and gifted programs.

Part of that plan is to hire and retain more teachers of color in the district. And as WFPL’s Roxanne Scott reports, this issue of teacher diversity affects what happens inside - and outside - the classroom.
