More than 930,000 requests for unemployment benefits have been filed by Kentuckians since early March amid the coronavirus pandemic. The crush of claims has overwhelmed the state’s unemployment insurance system, which had been slashed in recent years amid budget cuts. And Gov. Andy Beshear’s administration has struggled to provide benefits to out-of-work people in a timely manner. Capitol reporter Ryland Barton says the crisis is not unique to Kentucky.
