Raitt omitted Hiatt's second set of bridge lyrics perhaps only because of the "wife" rhyme, but I imagine the "obey" rhyme is not something women are comfortable with after finally getting it removed from most marriage vows. So I rewrote that section keeping the original idea mostly intact (I think) but better suited to a female POV:
Before all humankind I'll love you as my man
To cherish, honor and to care for.
This kind of life was never part of my plan.
