Chapter 7: Being at the Interface: Early Childhood as a Determinant of Health
In her interview, Dr. Greenwood, the Academic Lead of the NCCAH, reflects upon the intergenerational teachings and stories that are the supports, strengths, and values that drive Indigenous peoples forward in negotiating current realities. In one example, she shares how her grandfather was able to be a devout Catholic despite his residential school experience. This “code shifting” – or moving back and forth respectfully between different worlds – happens when one has a solid grounding in identity, or in the words of her grandfather, “…take what is good and…leave the rest behind.”

Chapitre 7 – Entre deux mondes – la petite enfance comme déterminant de la santé, avec Margo Greenwood
Dans son entrevue, Margo Greenwood, leader académique du CCNSA, se penche sur les enseignements et les histoires intergénérationnels qui constituent l'appui, la force et les valeurs qui poussent les peuples autochtones à négocier les réalités actuelles. Dans un exemple, elle partage la façon dont son grand-père a pu être un fervent catholique, malgré son expérience des pensionnats indiens. Cette « permutation de codes » – ou le déplacement entre différents mondes – survient lorsqu'on est doté d'une solide identité autochtone ou, comme le disait son grand-père, lorsqu'on « ... prend ce qui est bon et...laisse le reste derrière ».
