Description

For “Jody and Joey”, Brian collaborated with lifelong friends and mentors Keith Headley, Christine Leon, and David Bell. At the time, bassist Christine and Keith, who previously played piano for Roy Orbison, were performing as the popular country duo “Pick-Up”. They also frequently performed with the legendary “Dave Dudley and the Drifters Caravan” whenever they came to Europe. Meanwhile, Dave was keeping busy as a freelance sound engineer and musician, working with the European rock band “Break Point” and contributing his expertise at the renowned Dolphin Studios in Moerfelden, Germany.

While recording the album “Made in the Shade,” Brian found himself navigating the tricky waters of blending his classical training with a more laid-back country style. Seeking guidance, he would often turn to Christine, Keith, and Dave for help. So, it was common for the four of them to gather at Dave and Christine’s home for creative sessions. It was during one of these meet-ups that the initial concept of “Jody and Joey” began to take shape. Initially, they penned lyrics that humorously parodied the ‘Redneck’ themes prevalent at the time. However, the record company stepped in, feeling the original context was a bit too risqué, prompting Brian to polish the lyrics for a more audience-friendly version before the recording.

And thus, “Jody and Joey” emerged as a fun and catchy track that highlights the rich collaboration of these talented musicians, blending their unique backgrounds into something truly special!

Lyrics
Let me tell you a story ‘bout Joe MacCready
Built like a horse and twice as steady
Throwing a Bull was for him second nature
A slick-heeled rider and first-rate wrangler
It was about to come to an end
As Jody became his first real girlfriend

Now Jody acts like a good pastor's daughter
But she and the Book were like oil and water
Sneaking out after her folks were in bed
She’d go to meet Joey out back in the shed
He was twenty, she just sixteen
And they thought nobody in the world could get in between

Well, they were thick and thin through any kind of weather
With the world at their feet, when they’d get together
Stepping out, dancing, having a whole lot of fun
A-Romping in the Barn, and when they were done
They’d walk hand in hand to the Dairy Queen
Not knowing trouble was a-brewing, if you know what I mean

Jody and Joey gettin’ down on the Farm
‘Doing it’ all along in her Daddy’s Barn
Pushing their luck ‘til the broad daylight
Jody and Joey gettin’ down on the Farm

Aww. Watch them get down now…Huh!

Jody’s Daddy he’s a hard-working man
A god-fearing Christian doing the best that he can
Out in the field eighteen hours a day
Strong as an Ox in a quiet way
That all changed when he got the news
Like a stick of dynamite with a fresh lit fuse

Well, the kids were up to romping in the hay
And it ended when Daddy blocked the doorway
A-screaming and a-yelling and a-whole lotta noise
A hell of a ruckus, I can tell ya, boys
When the dust cleared well, the whole town agreed
To a shotgun wedding, and they were married

Jody and Joey gettin’ down on the Farm
‘Doing it’ all along in her Daddy’s Barn
The baby’s a-crying ‘til the broad daylight
Jody and Joey gettin’ down on the Farm
