Across a varied back catalogue, Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper imprint has primarily operated under the loose classification of Grime but has consistently tested its boundaries sufficiently in order to steer it clear of any real pigeon-holing. Previous releases have come from Social State, Bloom, Strict Face and Mr. Mitch himself and throughout, Gobstopper has remained a platform for talented oddballs to experiment to meritorious effect.
Next in line is another auspicious talent from London: Tarquin. Having garnered support from the likes of Plastician and Mickey Pearce and having had tracks aired on Rinse and NTS, Tarquin steps up and marries with Gobstopper’s ethos in offering up 2 fantastically esoteric productions that meld elements from the gamut of UK Bass music with a degree of sweet melody that lends them perfectly to the changing of the seasons.
‘Kid U’ kicks things off and uses pitch and envelope experimentation to layer darting vocal samples with whips, clangs and plucked strings that work together to build an allaying yet challenging recording. ‘Lost My Marbles’ then gets off to a pacy start. Claps on the 1, choked hats and an urgent synth tone rattle towards a plunge into halftime before discordant tones and nifty sampling decorate a baffling concoction that caps off another coup for Gobstopper and a fine addition to the catalogue.
