Description

Episode 84 continues the march through the 80’s with a leisurely cruise down Elm Street. Even though Will has been on a real Cronenberg kick lately, he took the time to revisit Freddy and his gang of unsuspecting teens. Before really getting into it, your hosts ponder whether the stuff on the cover really needs to have anything to do with the actual story. That seems to be a “no”. That goes for both movies and comics. Jolyon has checked back in with the “Underworld” series, and (surprise!) it’s still very blue and dark. Your hosts consider an all-Orson Welles podcast, since he was, after all, a real-life monster.
And then there’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984). A young Will and his friends once did a weekend marathon of Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies and lived to tell about it. This old classic holds up pretty well. Some of Wes Craven's ideas were really fresh at the time and most of the effects weren’t bad at all. Was it innovative for the 2010 re-make to make you want to go to sleep? Perhaps. Is Tom Cruise always filmed in forced perspective, making his 14-inch stature appear normal? We wonder. None of this matters when you dig into the life and times of a child killer who returns to seek revenge kills in the world of dreams. We’ll all look forward to seeing Freddy Krueger again, as long as he remembers to play the hits. You know, Fountain of Blood, Rollin’ Around on the Walls, Tongue Telephone…the hits. So, kick back under one of Ohio’s beautiful palm trees and drift off into a pleasant dream of an episode.
