Description

In this episode, we have Derrick Hoard LMFT as our guest. Derrick says that he thinks that traditional therapy is broken. Most practitioners are so boring and have no personality. They are so concerned with "treating mental illness" that they forget how to "have a conversation with a client". Listen to hear some of the stories behind his brand of therapy he calls "Situational Therapy" You can find him on Twitter @HoardJavan and at his professional website listed here https://thesituationaltherapist.com.

Update 2021: My name is Derrick Hoard also known as The Situational Therapist. At the time of this interview, I held views about racism and a perspective that was partly informed by my feelings of exclusions from "The Black Community" and also influenced by the legacy of slavery in America, and anger and resentment I had not yet dealt with. I had not found my community within the community and thus spoke in monolithic terms about my own people. Racism is an act of exclusion done by the dominant social group and that dominant social group is white. There are centuries of policies, practices and procedures that were put in place by that group that disproportionately cause physical, mental, and emotional suffering for black people and other people of color. The experience of being othered by my own community led me to speak in "othered" terms about them. However, as each injustice unfolds in front of our very eyes, I am reminded that I am black too. This interview was shot before coronavirus, before lockdown, and before I had an opportunity to explore what it meant to be black and find others who knew of this experience. I am sorry for speaking from my ignorance and from pain-while at the same time taking full responsibility for the hurt these words could cause to black people. I also want to take responsibility for being an ignorant mouthpiece for white supremacy and am glad to finally be on the right side of the track.
