A Singapore-registered vessel called the MS X-Press Pearl was heading from Gujarat, India to Colombo when a fire broke out on May 20, 2021, it was nine nautical miles off the coast of Sri Lanka. The vessel was carrying 1,486 containers, 81 of which contained "dangerous goods", including 25 tons of nitric acid (the remaining chemicals on board the vessel have not yet been confirmed). The vessel also carried 378 tons of oil and 78 tons of plastic pellets on board (some of them spilled into the ocean and began eroding the coastline, killing wildlife and damaging sensitive ecosystems).
Environmentalists in Sri Lanka said that this is one of the worst environmental disasters in the history of the country / idian ocean ...
