Description

A marathon reading given in honor of the first international Writers for Peace Day. After an introduction in which Kirkpatrick Sales describes how the day came to be and what is being done in other countries to celebrate, twelve writers give readings of their own works and those of others on the subjects of war and peace. HIghlights include Native American poet Maurice Kenny reading his poetry about the Wounded Knee Massacre and the Native American experience; Oscar Hijuelos reading from Homer, Ovid, Sophocles, and other classical sources; and Norman Mailer ending the day by reading from his book "Armies of the Night." Readers include Jerome Charyn, Amy Clampitt, Richard Gilman, Diana Chang, Allen Ginsberg, Grace Paley, Frances FitzGerald, Derek Parsons, and Arthur Kopit.
