The white bikes that you might have spotted locked to a fence or road sign are, according to ghostbike.org, called “ghost bikes.” Ghost bikes are roadside memorials for bicyclists who were killed while cycling. They are often located at the site of the incident and were first created in St. Louis Missouri in 2003.
Ghost bikes, which can be found in about 30 countries and numerous states here in the U.S., started popping up in Austin in 2005. The memorials usually feature a bike painted white, which is then chained and locked to a fence or a sign. Some include a plaque, flowers or other memorial materials.
