Metaphorically Speaking is the second single leading up to the new Mike Sheridan album Atmospherics.
The song is carried by heavy down tempo beats, which contrast with the bittersweet vocals of Agnes Aldén, both floating on dramatic string arrangements and keyboard pads.
“The idea for this song was to write a song from the perspective of the arctic nature.” says Mike Sheridan. “Here the continents are cold and frozen and undergo extreme transformations as they’re exposed to global warming and changes in the atmosphere. Glaciers and icebergs melt at rapid speed - out of sight in most of human daily life. We, as citizens of this planet, are all full of excuses; we’ve let our relationship with nature turn toxic and the calls for action and pro-activity is laid upon the coming generations.
Some say that we’ve entered an era called the Anthropocene. It’s the era in which humankind can now geologically shape the planet and most of its components at our will.
But if you’ve seen the news lately, we’re encountering a few hick-ups in this early phase.
In my mind Metaphorically Speaking is beautifully bittersweet; it deals with accountability in relationships - through an elaborate (and in this case huge) metaphor. As we paddle further down the street of one-way communication with Mother Nature, it becomes painstakingly clear that we’re dealing with an encore of the infamous old platitude “It’s not you, it’s me”.
The song features Agnes Aldén, a singer, songwriter and producer based in Gothenburg, Sweden alongfside Søren Kjærgaard on piano and Bjarke Falgren on violin..
