A relative newcomer on the Manchester house music scene, Ben Ikin has nevertheless set out an impressive stall with his first few releases, with subtle vocal manipulations, chugging grooves and rolling tech basslines very much the order of the day. That trend continues with Expectations - his latest for the increasingly vital FXtion Records.
Ikin drops two originals on the EP, and both are exemplary. The title track is as good as twisted, hypnotic, heads-down house gets, with its fizzing vocals and winding synth line burrowing its way into your consciousness and staying there for the duration. Hellin Knee follows in a similar vein in terms of its infectious groove, but where Expectations travelled a fairly dark path, this stays very much in the light, with open hats and sunny synth stabs resulting in a truly uplifting stomper.
Remixes come from Josh Gregg and Josh Lee, who put their own twists on Expectations and Hellin Knee respectively. The former is transformed into an ocean-deep house cut, while the latter adds drums rolls and a bubbling synth flourishes to carry the rolling groove confidently forward.
