God is seen as a Shepherd in the Old Testament as attested to in scriptures like Psalm 23. Jesus identifies himself as The Shepherd that David is talking about in the Psalm. He then elaborates for us so we can understand what a good shepherd does. He dies in order to save his sheep. This indicates what Jesus plans to do at the cross and why he’s doing it.
