Donald Trump held a rally in Waunakee today, his first campaign stop in Dane County this election cycle and the first to the area by a Republican presidential candidate in several decades.
The small, bedroom community is located north of Madison. Its residents lean a bit farther right than much of the rest of the county, one of Wisconsin’s liberal strongholds. Trump won more a third of the vote in Waunakee in 2020, compared to less than a quarter of the vote countywide.
The former president spoke for about 70 minutes inside a Dane Manufacturing warehouse. He talked about some of his top issues, including the border, taxes and levying tariffs to promote American products.
People lined up around the block to hear Trump speak – and about 500 people managed to get inside. But hundreds more were turned away when the doors closed around 1 this afternoon.
