The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted federal permits to Enbridge last week, backing the Canadian oil company’s plan to reroute Line 5 in northern Wisconsin.
That action was premature, environmental groups argue, as litigation over the project’s state-issued permits is still awaiting a final decision.
Rob Lee is a senior staff attorney with Midwest Environmental Advocates. The federal permits aren’t just out of order, he tells our News Producer Faye Parks, they’re also hard to access and review thanks to the government shutdown.
