Description

We begin this World View Feature with the cries of Nicaragua’s national bird, the Guardabarranco and the Nicaraguan musicians, Duo Guardabarranco to introduce the Richland Center Santa Teresa Sister City Project’s bird activities.

People in Richland County have sistered with the Santa Teresa Municipality since the 80s and in the 90s began environmental activities to protect nesting turtles and the local forest and crops. More recently they have paired with other groups like Optics to the Tropics; the environmental organization, Paso Pacífíco; and MoSI, the network of bird monitors and banding stations across Latin America to teach and learn about birds and where they go and what they do.

Jane Furchgott and Barbara Duerkson from Richland Center and members of the RCST Bird Committee came into the studio to talk with Gil Halsted about birds in Nicaragua and their travels around the world as well as how to protect them and provide habitat for them.
