After decades in use, the landfill on Madison’s southeast side is slated to run out of space by 2029. The county has a plan to maintain service and reimagine waste disposal – at a sustainability campus right across the street from the old landfill.
The project is now advancing through the permitting process with the state’s DNR and, if all goes according to plan, is expected to break ground in 2027.
But it has its opponents, namely nearby residents who flooded the county with their concerns about extra traffic, noise, and odors at the site. A petition challenging the project garnered nearly 600 signatures.
John Welch is the director of Dane County’s Department of Waste and Renewables. Sitting down with our News Producer Faye Parks this week, he shared an update on the project – and outlined their vision to revolutionize waste management in the county.
