Premiering on NBC radio on July 7, 1949 and hailed as a new high in radio drama, though it may sound a bit staged now, it was a trend setter, offering unprecedented realism and much more natural writing and acting than most police dramas of the day. The series featured actual dramatizations of cases taken from the files of the Los Angeles Police Dept. Jack Webb played Sgt. Joe Friday... with his tight-lipped no-nonsense delivery he became the role model for police detective on the radio.
